Hidden Gaze

Welcome to my website, I hope you enjoy browsing a selection of my work

For the last two years, since the first lockdown, I have been an online student at the Norfolk Painting School Live.  Run by Martin Kinnear and his wife Jane.

Martin is a successful artist and inspirational teacher.  He has been offering weekly hour long demonstrations covering oil painting techniques and studying the work of many artists classical and modern.  He has grown a community of enthusiastic students who can join skill building and master classes.  I can't praise the school highly and enough and can definitely recommend to anyone whether a  beginner or a professional wanting to improve their painting practice

I have been greatly influenced by my mentor and friend Fred Sinkinson (1922 - 2009). He was a wonderful teacher, exploring beyond what is seen, encouraging true observation and always an authentic personal response to our subject.  Fred had a classical art education in Paris after WW2 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and his legacy has certainly been passed down from the hands and eyes of his tutors to his own students.  He is much missed.

Each subject has many interpretations and I return to them again and again.  articularly the ever changing birches which grow so abundantly in the forest close to where I live. After returning to the Isle of Wight I have taken much delight in watching the ever changing light on water and huge skies which are part of island life.  It is an ongoing exploration and love affair with the beautiful world around us, the paintings are allowed to paint themselves.

Please feel free to get in touch if you would like more information about the paintings or the way I work. My details are on the contact page.
